Welcome Digest [12.12.25]
Free museums, Carti plays Fortnite, the Friday Classifieds, and more
Welcome To December 12th
Today’s Important Headlines
🖼️ Beginning on January 1, admission to MoMA PS1 will be completely free
New year, free museum. Celebrating their 50th anniversary MoMA PS1 will eliminate its admission fee thanks to a generous contribution from creative entrepreneur Sonya Yu, who has long championed accessible art.
🧛 Playboi Carti and Fortnite launch event with I AM MUSIC style in-game concert
From fans clowning Carti with fake posts like “Iggy Azalea claims Playboi Carti’s first father–son interaction with Onyx in the past two years happened in Fortnite,” to a chaotic stream last night where Carti played with fans, teased Baby Boi and a Whole Lotta Red (deluxe), got annoyed at people joining with Travis Scott skins, and watched fans make their Carti skins twerk to K-pop, the whole thing is absurd.
🦛 Lalanne’s ‘Hippopotame Bar’ sells for $31.4 M. destroying all previous design auction records
François-Xavier Lalanne’s “Hippopotame Bar” sold yesterday for an unprecedented $31.4 million at Sotheby’s in New York, breaking Lalame’s personal record as well as the record for any design piece ever. The hand-wrought copper bar surged past its $7–10 million estimate, tripling the high figure after an intense 26-minute, seven-bidder showdown.
🎥 Paul Thomas Anderson seen filming Cameron Winter’s Carnegie Hall concert last night
Posted up behind a massive 35MM camera, acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson was spotted with Benny Safdie filming an intimate solo Cameron Winter show, subsequently uniting all sectors of film and music twitter.
👟 Basketcase and New Balance drop collab
People online were quick to compare the collab to last year’s Miu Miu and New Balance release (“we got miu miu at home”), and while both collaborations feature low-profile brown sneakers, the Basketcase pair have enough distinctive details including fuzzy laces, metal lace hooks, and a more wearable colorway to stand on its own.
🤖 GAINAX, the anime studio behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, shuts down after 42 years
In news that may seem tragic at first glance, GAINAX’s closure is actually a net positive. While Hideaki Anno created one of the most celebrated anime of all time there, its creative spirit lives on in successor studios like Trigger (Kill la Kill, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) and Khara (the Evangelion rebuild series). What’s really ending is GAINAX’s long run of shady tax practices and pachinko licensing.

Posters created to fight the spread of HIV and AIDS in the late 80s and early 90s.
The posters from this era were created by groups like ACT UP, Gran Fury and the Silence Equals Death Project, using public space to call out government inaction and the rising death toll.
They addressed discrimination in housing, gaps in prison healthcare, the lack of services for women and the urgent need for national treatment and research, turning graphic design into an advocacy tool.

This MoMA PS1 announcement is huge for the contemporary art scene. Free admission models fundamentally shift how communities engage with institutions because the decision to visit becomes about curiosity rather than cost calculation. I visited a similar free museum back inBrooklyn and noticed way more repeat visitors just popping in for 20 minutes, which honestly seems healthier than treating museums like expensive all-day commitmnts. Wonder if other major contemporary spaces will follow suit.
