The Night Behind Bassvictim's Surprise Album
A photojournal
Welcome creative director Danny Cole spent the evening of their surprise album release with Bassvictim. This was his experience.
It’s 1am on Thursday. I’m at karaoke. Bassvictim texts me to come over.
I get to their hotel and the door is already open.
Maria is making fun of me for being too polite (I don’t think anyone else would agree
with her) and Ike shows me his new toy, this electronic flute with a face on it. He later thinks I stole it, but asks if I “accidentally took it.”
They had sent me some new Bassvictim tracks two days before. It’s 2am now.
They decide they want to put out their album immediately.
The working title is ?. Ike points out this is already an XXXTENTACION album. “Perhaps we call it ???”
But XXXTENTACION is dead. He can’t make his album bigger. Bassvictim is very much alive. So they keep it.
They text their friend for an album cover. He’s taking too long.
Ike puts on ‘imagine’ by John Lennon on a camo JBL speaker.
I show them this website from 2015 where you could make any image look psychedelic.
Ike already knows it. So we do a photoshoot on my iPhone.
Maria remembers she has an ex boyfriend and starts crying. It breaks my heart.
The next morning, the album is out, and Bassvictim plays two of the best sold out shows I’ve ever seen in New York City.
I genuinely think they are the best artists in the world.
