Reviews are in: The Whitney Biennial fell flat
Critics say this year’s Whitney Biennial lacks a clear point of view, with many pointing to its avoidance of political themes. The New Yorker described the work as “ChatGPT art,” citing a disconnect between the pieces and their makers. The response raises a broader question about whether art needs authorship or politics to resonate, though generational differences may be shaping the divide.
Spotify’s new feature lets you see who sampled who
Spotify has launched SONGDNA, a feature that shows the full chain of samples and interpolations behind any track, along with expanded credits for producers, writers, and collaborators. The update follows Spotify’s recent acquisition of WhoSampled and marks a major step toward giving proper recognition to the full ecosystem of contributors behind a song.
Art Basel comes to Hong Kong this weekend
Despite supply chain disruptions tied to conflict in the Middle East, Art Basel Hong Kong will host 240 galleries from 41 countries and territories, alongside an unprecedented six satellite fairs and a Joan Mitchell painting that stands as the highest-valued work Sotheby’s has ever brought to the Asian market. Our must-sees include Zero 10, a digital-era art collection; Lap-See Lam’s Asian gallery solo debut Bamboo Palace, Revisited; Remembrance: A Tribute to the Work of Dinh Q. Lê; and In Pursuit of Naïveté: Fang Zhaoling’s Journey.
Grimes and Meek Mill are now on LinkedIn
After a week of tweeting about Claude and saying he needed to use Palantir “for like an hour,” Meek Mill has created a LinkedIn profile, saying he wants to connect with real people and further his brand and business. Grimes, who announced a year ago that she would only release music on LinkedIn has finally joined the platform. Her bio highlights her work as an artist, her interest in AI, and her claim that she “set the NFT world on fire” with her 2021 WarNymph Collection Vol. 1. Neither are close to hitting the coveted 500+ connections.
Music collective highlight: Asian Paper
UK-based South Asian collective Asian Paper is up next, blending electroclash with South Asian influences and samples. From The Twins, check out “holding on” featuring RADA, “FUCKERSBY” featuring fakemink, and “TUMERIC.” From amil raja, start with “i like you around” and “st mary’s triangle.”
